Its real strength is agents that do things: call an internal API, update an account, run a multi-step workflow with conditions, integrate a system nobody else supports. If you have developer capacity and the requirement is automation rather than answers, that flexibility is the product and no packaged widget replaces it.

It also meters honestly. Every conversation includes $0.10 of AI usage covered by the vendor, with $25 of AI usage on Plus and $150 on Team, and at 95% of the limit a $10 credit grant is purchased automatically. Worth knowing that auto-recharge exists before you turn on a campaign.

A packaged assistant trades flexibility for having the e-commerce work already done. Vatdi installs as a native plugin on WooCommerce, OpenCart 3 and 4, PrestaShop, Magento, Shopware, Joomla and Drupal Commerce, syncs products, categories, prices and policy pages automatically, ranks best sellers by units actually sold, and answers live order-status questions once the customer gives the order number plus the email or phone on the order. None of that is built; it ships.

What you give up is the ability to make the agent act on your systems. Vatdi answers, suggests, offers coupons you configured and hands over to a person. It does not write to your store, process refunds, or call arbitrary APIs — there are no webhooks and no Zapier app.

Comparing per-conversation products is harder than it looks, because the unit is defined differently and the definition is where the money is.

Neither approach is dishonest. But if you are forecasting a support budget rather than an engineering budget, one meter is much easier to defend than two.

• Do you need actions or answers? Actions in back-office systems point to Botpress. Answers from published content point to a packaged tool.
• Who maintains it? A built agent needs an owner when the catalogue, the policies or the model changes.
• What is your monthly volume? Per-conversation platforms get expensive quickly at retail volumes.
• How fast do you need it? An afternoon versus a project.

A built agent has an owner, and the cost of that owner usually exceeds the platform fee. Someone has to update the flows when the catalogue changes, re-test the prompts when the model version moves, fix the integration when an API changes, and keep the deployment healthy. On a two-person store that person is the founder.

A packaged assistant moves most of that work into the sync. Products, categories, prices and policy pages update themselves; the answers follow the content rather than a diagram; and the model and infrastructure are the vendor's problem. What remains for you is content work — writing the answer to a question the AI could not handle — which improves your site for human readers as well.

The trade is real in both directions. You cannot make a packaged tool do something it does not do, and Botpress can be made to do almost anything. The right question is whether the thing you need is unusual enough to be worth owning.

Run the packaged tool first, because it costs nothing to find out. Connect the store, let the catalogue sync, and look at the questions the AI could not answer after a week. That list is the honest specification for whether you need a custom agent at all: if the gaps are missing content, no platform will fix them, and if the gaps are genuine actions — refunds, account changes, internal lookups — then a build is justified and you now know exactly what it must do.
