The comparison below treats them side by side, but the first question to ask of any "free chatbot" is which kind it is. A live-chat tool that is free forever still costs you the time to answer every message; an AI plan with a low cap costs nothing until the cap and then a few dollars. Those are different budgets, and most disappointment with "free" comes from confusing them.

What free leaves out, by type
- The AI itself. The most common gap: the free tier is the inbox; the component that answers is a paid add-on. If the free plan does not answer a customer on its own, it is free live chat.
- Volume. Caps are the honest way to make an AI plan free. Vatdi's 15 conversations a month is enough to test with real visitors on a small WordPress site and not enough to run a busy store; the next step is $4.49 a month for 150.
- The badge. Free plans show the vendor's branding. On Vatdi, removing it is the only paid-only change.
- Store connections. Some free tiers place the widget but never read your products or orders. Vatdi's plugin syncs products and looks up WooCommerce orders on the free plan.

Free plan or free trial?
They are different promises. A free trial ends, usually after 14 days, and then the bill starts or the widget stops; Intercom and Zendesk work this way as of September 2026. Testing a free chatbot on WordPress in thirty minutes
- Install from Plugins › Add New and connect. If the free plan requires a card, note it.
- Check what synced: the count of posts, pages and products against what you published.
- Ask five real questions from your inbox, in the live widget on a phone.
- Ask two you should not be able to answer: a service or product you do not offer, and an exact date. A decline beats a guess.
- On WooCommerce, try a real order number with the right email, then a wrong one.
- Read the cap: conversations, messages, agents or credits, and what happens when you reach it.
